Method of forming super-conducting joint

Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a super-conducting joint for which thermal loss is avoided and a drift speed is minimized by coating a contact region formed by bringing Nb 3 Sn super-conductor in contact with NbTi super-conductor by means of fused Pb-Bi. SOLUTION: A high magnetic field use Nb 3 Sn super-conductor 10 stabilized by pinching Nb 3 Sn layer 12 with copper layers 14, 16 and a low magnetic field use NbTi super-conductor 20 are arranged in mutual contact and holding tape 28 is wound around to fix a contact region 25. Subsequently, the contact region 25 is dipped in a tin bath at about 350°C for about more than 15 minutes to remove any copper stabilizing material in this region so that a Nb 3 Sn layer 12 and a NbTi wire 20 may be brought in direct contact with each other. Subsequently, the contact region 25 is dipped in Pb-Bi bath at about 350°C for about 7 to 10 minutes to be subjected to coating. Then, this region 25 is placed in a mold 30, further dipped in Pb-Bi bath and subjected to coating and thereafter it is cooled and solified, nextly mold 30 is removed so as to achieve a super- conducting joint 8.
